Best Budget Smartphones on AliExpress (that are actually good)

Budget smartphones are enough for most people, and I’m not talking about the 2000’s phones with limited features.

Today’s affordable devices pack impressive specs: capable cameras, fast processors, and premium-enough build quality that are very much capable of rivaling flagship models.

Of course, there are massive trade-offs when looking at the sub-$100 phones – so we won’t consider those.

Instead, this is about the best possible options in a $100 to $300 range.

Smart buyers choose budget alternatives that deliver 80% of the performance at 30% of the cost, then upgrade when they actually need to – not when the advertisers tell them to.

So why pay premium prices for brand names inflated by massive marketing budgets?

A few reasons why you might be more inclined to go with a $1000 flagship model instead of a budget one:

  1. Better hardware. Things like a slightly better signal for WiFi (~20% better in most cases), better battery life (“smarter” phones understand how to use it better), and slightly sharper videos and photos (flagships come with lasers that help the lens focus on an object, which makes it easier for the camera to identify).
  2. More software updates. More expensive phones tend to get them faster, because companies want to prioritize higher-paying customers.
  3. More “premium” materials. Like stronger glass (which will break anyway if you drop it hard enough) and a thicker/stronger shell.
  4. Faster storage and faster processor (noticeable when you run high-demanding tasks like zooming in on super high-res images or editing videos). But faster doesn’t mean that the budget ones are outright bad, it just means that they are ~25% slower.

If none of these sound like a good enough reason to pay $750 more, here are the best options.

POCO X7 Pro

(Higher-end of low-budget option)

Price: $275

Poco is another sub-brand of Xiaomi.

While Redmi focuses on budget to mid-range, Poco is more about the mid to high-range phones.

The X7 Pro is a lower-tier phone by Poco’s standards, but it very much fits the definition of “high-spec, lower-cost” of this post.

  • Dimensity 8400-Ultra processor
  • 8 or 12 GB RAM options
  • 256 GB on-board memory
  • 6.67″ CrystalRes 120hz AMOLED display
  • 6000 mAh battery, 90W HyperCharge
  • NFC, face unlock, fingerprint unlock (in-screen sensor)
  • IP68 water-resistance
  • Dual speakers
  • Dual SIM, supports 5G

This phone has really nailed the mid-range segment.

Poco X7 Pro offers flagship-tier features, like IP69 rating and 90W charging, which are rare at this price.

Dimensity 8400-Ultra chipset ensures smooth performance. It is able to handle demanding games like COD at 120 FPS (which will drop to 60 when the phone starts increasing in temperature), and Genshin Impact at max settings without overheating.

Battery life is exceptional with a 6000 mAh capacity (6550 in Indian and Asian models), lasting ~ 2 working days at normal usage and including a 90W fast charger in the box.

With UFS 4.0 storage, app loading times are very fast.

The main drawbacks are that it runs on Xiaomi’s Hyper OS 2.0 which is clean and smooth for the most part, but it does unfortunately include some unremovable bloatware; and the USB 2.0 port, which makes the file transfer noticeably slower than 3.0+

Umidigi G9 5G

(Ultra-budget option)

Price: $102

Ever since I started following them, Umidigi have been pumping out very impressive options at very reasonable prices.

I’ve owned F1, G9A, G100A, and I’m sure there were a few others in between.

The build quality has always been great, and apart from some models having very “Chinesy” taglines on the back, I had no issues with the design or performance.

Umidigi G9 features

  • Unisoc T765G processor
  • 6GB RAM
  • 128GB storage
  • 5G capable
  • Dual-SIM friendly (or you can use the extra port as a Micro-SD slot)
  • Large 6.75″ 90hZ display
  • 5,000 mAh battery + 18W fast charger
  • Fingerprint unlock

The performance of the Unisoc processor is comparable to devices with MediaTek Helio G99.

The 6 GB RAM notably has the option to expand up to 12GB by utilizing the unused storage.

The 5,000mAh battery capacity provides a full-day usage, and 18W fast charging takes it from 0 to 100% in just under 2 hours.

This is a pragmatic solution that doesn’t compromise on the features that matter most in daily use.

REDMI Note 14 5G

(Mid-low budget version)

Price: $190

Redmi – Xiaomi’s smartphone sub-brand has been releasing high-quality phones for a while now.

Redmi 14 Note Pro is their latest budget offering that comes in 3 different colour options.

  • Octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 7025-Ultra processor
  • 5110mAh battery, 45W fast charging
  • 120Hz 6.67″ AMOLED display
  • Dual speakers
  • Dual SIM
  • NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, IP64 water-resistance
  • 8 GB RAM
  • 256 GB on-board memory with an option to expand via micro SD

And if you want to go into the nitty-gritty details.

The MediaTek Dimensity 7025-Ultra processor performs adequately for daily tasks. Not a high-end processor, but solid and capable. For the tasks that are handled by RAM: of which it has 8 GB.

Build quality has been upgraded with Gorilla Glass 5 for the display, and it has an improved IP64 dust/water resistance.

The 5110 mAh battery takes just under an hour to get from 0% to 100% with a 45W turbo charger. It was downgraded from 90W in the Pro model, but that also means that the battery won’t get as hot, and also won’t deplete as fast -which is a good thing IMO.

REALMI C61

(Bonus low-budget option)

Price: $94

The Realme C61 is a budget-friendly smartphone with an armor shell protection (which doesn’t look any different than a regular phone – it’s just sturdier), for an enhanced drop- and scratch resistance.

At a glance:

  • 6.78-inch HD+ 90Hz display
  • Unisoc T612 processor and Mali-G57 GPU
  • 5,000mAh battery, 10W charging
  • Runs on Android 14 with the Realme UI 5.0 wrapper
  • IP54 dust and splash resistance
  • 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard memory in the base model

The phone is powered by Unisoc T612 chipset with Mali-G57 GPU. These are not super fast, but they are appropriate and fitting for the budget-tier performance.

Its 4GB RAM can be increased through the vRAM extension technology, by utilizing up to 2 GB of unused onboard memory.

If (or rather, when) the onboard memory is not enough expandable storage up to 2TB via dedicated microSD slot.

The connection is limited to 4G.

Cameras are nothing to write home about, but they are adequate for the price.

Its redeeming qualities are the IP54 water resistance, and reinforced protection – features that are typically reserved for the more expensive devices.
